“You don’t know how badly I want to kiss you right now.”

“What’s stopping you?” I ask, needing more of his skin on mine in that moment.

He leans his forehead against mine. “Don’t tease me like that, Margo.”

“Who’s teasing?” My hand snakes up his chest until it finds the exposed flesh on his neck. “I want you to kiss me.”

He cups my face. “What are you doing to me? Why can’t I resist you?”

I bite my lip as I gaze into his eyes. “I’ve asked myself the same thing about a million times. I’m supposed to hate you, but I can’t stop wanting you.”

That was easier to admit to him that I ever thought it would be.

Alexander sucks a rush of air in through his nose and his chest heaves. He doesn’t move away from me, only stretches his hand out and hits the intercom button and simply instructs. “Drive.”

“Where to, sir?” the driver asks.

They stepped onto the elevator, just the two of them, but she pressed twelve instead of six. Were they back at square one, where she retreated to her office in the sky instead of dealing with her feelings head on? Too bad for her, Cole thought to himself. There was too much at stake for him. More than she could even fathom. He needed to make a decision about his uncle’s ultimatum, and the clock was running out. The fate of his father’s business still hung in the balance, dependent upon his next move. Shaun’d basically said she was done with Olivia, and the way she had stared at him when she didn’t think he’d notice had set his body ablaze. Frustrated, rejected, and somewhat inebriated, Cole slammed his fist against the emergency stop button and the car jerked to a halt. “What the–?” Shaun exclaimed as the scream of the buzzer bounced around the four walls. Cole stepped toward her while she inched back. “Are you drunk?” He attempted to shake off the beer fog slowly swallowing his brain whole. “Maybe.” He would let Shaun make up his mind. If she turned him down right here, right now, then he’d be free and clear. He’d report back to Robert that she wasn’t interested and that he’d need to employ another stud-for-hire. But what if she didn’t? Cole thought as he ceased his forward progression. Not an inch of space remained between them. He backed away to the opposite side of the car and poked at the button for six. When the car stopped, he glanced over his shoulder at her. She hadn’t moved. Didn’t that make him feel even more like an asshole. “Don’t worry, Ms. Wright. It’s just business between you and me from now on. I promise.” He stepped out, leaving Shaun to continue her ascent to the twelfth floor alone. He was tired of looking like a world-class idiot, hard up on his boss and her mind-scrambling skirts. He’d really thought something had passed between them at lunch, but no. Maybe the pressure from his uncle was starting to fuck with his brain. “Mr. Jacobson.” Cole stopped and turned around. Shaun stood just outside of the elevator, one arm stretched out to keep the doors from closing. Her expression gave nothing away, but he could see her swallow, as if she were preparing herself for something. 1. Beer or hard liquor.

            Depends on the occasion. Mostly beer. But if a guy has just gotten one of those Dear John letters, hard liquor might be required.

            You’ve got to be kidding me. Next question.

            Soccer, without a doubt. I could even get into women’s soccer now!

4. Flavor of ice cream?

            Chocolate

5. Coffee or Tea?

            Definitely coffee.

6. Favorite food?

            Ice cream and nachos.

7. Blondes or brunettes?

            That’s changed for me. Used to be blondes all the way. Now, I love long-haired brunette girls, like my Marcy.

8. Favorite Super Hero?

            I’d have to say The Incredible Hulk. No one expected him to wear a tux or get his hair cut or find shoes that fit him.

9.  Swimming or sunbathing?

            Depends on who I’m with and what kind of oil she’s got. But generally, in the absence of my lady, it would be swimming all the way.

10. What do you hope to be doing when you’re 90.

            Going skydiving in the morning, having a nice lunch and then a nice roll in the hay. I’d say that would be about the perfect day.

Annie dropped back into her seat, contemplating another cup of coffee when a guy approached her table. He looked like he’d just rolled out of bed. He was cute, with shaggy brown hair and, Annie noticed, sleepy bright blue eyes. He smiled, revealing straight white teeth. “Hey, are you Annie? From the show Laguna Nights?”

“That’s me,” she said, feeling her cheeks blush under his gaze, a strange phenomenon as this was the expected question. Coming from him, though, with his eyes focused intensely on her, she felt electricity crackle in the air between them. This was a first. So far, through high school and college, she had been on dates with some great guys, even multiple dates with a couple of them, but none of them she would consider boyfriend material. She had decided she was destined to be everybody’s friend, guys and girls. But with this guy, well, she felt her heart beat a little faster.

“Can I grab you another cup of coffee? I was just going inside to order. Black, right?” he said, looking at her almost empty cup.

“Yes, sure,” she said, shrugging her shoulders.
